One major step in our project is the creation of the battery boxes which will be placed underneath the car between both axles. We are keeping the mechanical all-wheel drive so we have a cardan shaft running in the middle of the car. This leads to two boxes filled with battery cells, one left and one right of the shaft.
The boxes will be built from bent aluminium sheets. They are laser cut according to the CAD drawings. Nowadays many companies offer laser cutting or water jet cutting. The laser is faster but can not cut through very thick material. But for our 3mm aluminium sheets it is suited perfectly.
The machine operator reads 2-dimensional unrolling of the constructed piece and sends it to the laser cutting controller.
Within minutes the pieces are cut out and can be taken out of the machine for further treatment like rounding off the edges.
